Fight for your dream

September challenge: Back to School

Lets be honest- when chasing your dream you're gonna have to fight for what you want.

For the past two years, I have had nothing but conflict circle around my writing dream. My family wants me to go back to college and focus on social work. And I get their confusion. I'll be the first to admit in high school I used my English class as a personal siesta hour.

I think that's why I am so grateful for my blogging and writing friends. They support and cheer you on like other. A big thank you to ya'll!

So, how do you fight for what you want when others believe its the wrong path. I learned from my writing teacher, you listen but in the end, you have to do what makes you happy. Focus on the love of the game-whether is be writing, painting or sports. The rest will work itself out with hard work.

I think Shaun White (2-time Olympic gold medalist snowboarder) summed it up best. In Vogue Magazine, he said, "It's funny because everybody asks me what I'm thinking about when I'm dropping in. And the thing is, I'm about to do something really focused. You don't hear anything. You don't think about anything. It just naturally happens."

Let your dream naturally happen. There's gonna be conflict but in the end, the struggle will be worth it.

One of my all time favorite books is Illusions, by Richard Bach. In it, there's a scene where Richard is learning how to vaporize clouds. Don's disappear in an instant. Richard's take a while. He's blasting them with giant lasers, etc. but they don't disappear very quickly at all. Don comments that the vaporizing wouldn't take so long if Richard weren't so attached to the clouds. "Negative attachment, Richard. If you really want to remove a cloud from your life, you do not make a big production out of it, you just relax and remove it from your thinking. That's all there is to it."

The truth is, I love drama. [Sigh.] I'm attached to it. [Head hanging in embarrassment.] Those times I let myself detach from the drama so I can focus on something else are the times that the problems go away. I'm still working on this. A lot.

A lot.

Oh, I like that quote!

You do what makes you happy...

Just as long as it doesn't involve throwing ice cream sandwiches at the town hall.

More then once.

Don't make a big production, just relax and remove it from your thinking. So easily said, yet sometimes difficult to do....especially for those of us who love the drama!!! As I'm getting older, I find I don't have the time and energy for the drama. I want to be around positive, happy energy. Do what you know is right in your heart. It is difficult at times, but like you say, worth the struggle.

People that shun conflict don't grow very much. It seems that you are all about growth. ~Mary

After more than a few years following a passion (but finding it less and less over time), I've found myself back in school to follow a different passion. I enjoy writing when properly inspired and motivated, but that isn't my dream. But I will say this about being in school: if I had the time and inclination, oh the stories I could tell...

Serengraig: Please get the time and inclination. We want the stories!
